Dr. Skilton-Sylvester Named The Rosemary and Walter Blankley Endowed Chair in Education at Investiture Ceremony

Blankley Investiture

Marking the beginning of a new chapter in Arcadia University’s history, Dr. Ellen Skilton-Sylvester, professor of education, was named The Rosemary and Walter Blankley Endowed Chair in Education. The University’s first donor designated chair results from a $1 million gift from Walter and Rosemary Deniken Blankley ’57, ’06H, reflecting their longstanding commitment to the transformative power of education.

Approximately 200 people, including 17 trustees, President Emerita Dr. Bette Landman, past president Dr. Jerry M. Greiner, trustee emerita Beverly Goldberg '53, students, alumni, faculty, and staff, gathered on March 6 to witness this milestone event in the Commons Great Room.

“It is entirely appropriate that this endowed Chair should be in the field of education,” said President Nicolette DeVille Christensen before she presented Skilton-Sylvester with a medallion signifying her appointment. “The education of the next generation of teachers is one of the greatest investments in the future that we can make. When I read Dr. Skilton-Sylvester’s three-year proposal…it was clear to see how her work aligns perfectly both with Rosemary and Walter’s philosophy on the unrivaled power of education and Arcadia’s commitment to expanding civic education at the local and global levels.” Read more.

Florida Alumni Reconnect During Reunions

Alumnae and friends from many different classes gathered for the annual Florida Reunions throughout the state. Some live year-round in sunny Florida and other “snowbirds” enjoy attending while they are in Florida for the season or on vacation. View photos.

President Nicolette DeVille Christensen highlighted the exciting events which have occurred on campus since the beginning of the academic year, such as visits from Justice Sotomayor and Nobel Laureate Michael Brown, as well as the recent Rosemary and Walter Blankley Endowed Chair in Education, presented to Dr. Ellen Skilton-Sylvester. She also shared the successes of the Arcadia students in academics and athletics.

The Office of Alumni Relations expresses gratitude to alumni hosts Ann Durie Westerfield ’60 (Naples), Merle Arbogast Chorba ’63 and Marilyn Neuburger Blocklinger ’53 (Sarasota), Mary Lou Pickell Nelson ’59 (The Villages) and Janet Copeland Zinman ’62 and Lynn Kronenberg Berman ’62 (Boynton Beach), who were able to secure beautiful venues for the reunion luncheons.

If you spend time in Florida in February, make sure to let the Office of Alumni Relations know to put you on the Florida Reunion mailing list.
