Mangione Receives $10 Million Grant from NIH
A new exercise intervention published in Health and Medicine Week, “Home-Based Leg Strengthening Exercise Improves Function 1 Year After Hip Fracture: A Randomized Controlled Study” was the basis for a $10 million grant from Institutes of Health. Read more.

Dr. Rebecca Craik, Professor of Physical Therapy, and Dr. Carol Leiper, Emerita Professor of Physical Therapy, co-authored “Validity of the Step Watch Step Activity Monitor: Preliminary Findings for Use in Persons With Parkinson’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis” with Amy L. Schmidt ’09D.P.T., and Aaron H. Thrush ’09D.P.T. in the Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy. Read more.
McClure, Tate Present at Philadelphia Hand Meeting
Dr. Phil McClure, Professor of Physical Therapy, and Dr. Angela Tate, Adjunct Professor of Physical Therapy, presented a workshop on “Management of Scapular Dysfunction” at the Philadelphia Hand Meeting on March 5.

Experiential Learning Introduces Students to Range of Patients, Health-Care
Settings

77 Earn Doctor of Physical Therapy Degrees
Seventy-seven students earned the Doctor of Physical Therapy degree during Arcadia University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Commencement on Saturday, Feb. 19. Dr. Steve Michael, Provost and Academic Vice President, conferred the degrees, directing the students to move their tassels in unison. Physical Therapy faculty performed the hooding of each doctoral candidate, and Professor and Department Chair Dr. Rebecca Craik greeted each graduate with her hallmark hug. Read more. The symposium will integrate findings from two meetings held by the American Physical Therapy Association: the Physical Therapy and Society Summit (PASS) and the Vitalizing Practice Through Research and Research Through Practice conference. Sullivan Elected Secretary to APTA’s Student Board of Directors
Last fall, Colleen Sullivan ’12 was elected to serve as Secretary for the Student Assembly Board of Directors at the 2010 American Physical Therapy Association’s National Student Conclave in Cherry Hill, N.J. Seventeen of Arcadia PT students participated in the weekend’s events. Read more.

Simpson-Caucci Receives Award for PT iPhone App
Husband-and-wife team Desirea Simpson-Caucci ’99,’02D.P.T. and Robert Caucci ’99, who own and operate Conshohocken Physical Therapy, have been recipients of several prestigious awards in the last year. In addition to having her practice named the Best PT Practice in Montgomery Country, Pa., for the third consecutive year, Simpson-Caucci also received the Dorland Health People Award for Physical Therapy for her help in designing a PT iPhone app. Read more.
Formica Returns to Arcadia for Transitional D.P.T.
Gina Formica ’86, ’11D.P.T. was one of the last students to graduate from Arcadia with a B.S. in Physical Therapy. Twenty-five years later, she graduated in February with the first class of Arcadia’s transitional Doctorate of Physical Therapy program who earned their degrees online. “I returned to Arcadia because I enjoyed my education here, and I was prepared when I went out in the work force. I learned that many of my former professors still were teaching at Arcadia,” she says. Read more.
