Spring 2006

  • Islam under Pressure,”a video-conference dialogue, was held on April 27 with Arcadia University, Cerritos College (California), Durham Technical Community College (North Carolina), Montclair State University (New Jersey), Palomar College (California), Santa Ana College, Caifornia and the University of Ulster (Northern Ireland). Panelists for Arcadia University included Professor Hayat Alvi-Aziz.
  • Equality, Empowerment and Education: A New Era for Latin American Women, ” a video-conference dialogue, was held on April 27 with Arcadia University, Fairleigh Dickinson (New Jersey), Roger Williams University (Rhode Island), Western Michigan University (Michigan), Universidad Autonoma de Bucaramanga, Colombia (Latin America) and the United Nations. Panelists for Arcadia University included Instructor Cristiane Carneiro and International Peace and Conflict Resolution program students Mehmet Erdogan and Julie Tippens. The panelists for the United Nations were: Rachel Mayanja, Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on Gender Issues; Carmen Maria Gallardo Hernandez, Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the United Nations; and Charlotte Bunch, Distinguished Professor in Women’s and Gender Studies, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The Chair of the panel was Maria-Luisa Chavez, Chief of Educational Outreach, United Nations Department of Public Information.
  • A presentation on Arab Culture by Prof. Hayat Alvi-Aziz as part of the Arcadia University “Lunch and Learn” Community Scholars program on Friday April 21.
  • Conflicts in the Middle East: Where to go from here?,” a panel discussion moderated by Prof. Hayat Alvi-Aziz, was held on Thursday February 9. The panelists included Arcadia Professors Warren Haffar and Cristiane Carneiro, and Prof. Bassam Haddad, St. Joseph's University, Philadephia.
  • “Women in Islam,” a panel discussion moderated by Prof. Hayat Alvi-Aziz, was held on Sunday February 5 at the Wilma Theatre, Philadelphia.
  • Violence against Women,” a video-conference dialogue between Arcadia University and officials from the United Nations (UNIFEM), was held on Thursday March 9.

    Ebadi Lecture
  • Dr. Shirin Ebadi, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, gave a public lecture at the University of Pennsylvania on Thursday January 26. Arcadia students and faculty members were in attendance (photo above).
