Information Technology
Library and Information Technology (LIT) serves the technology needs of the University's faculty, staff and students. IT is responsible for planning and development of the University computing systems and data networks. IT also maintains the campus network, administrative systems, e-mail servers, University-owned desktop computers, and the University Web site and portal. For students, IT maintains the campus computer labs, offers Internet service and e-mail accounts to all students.
MyArcadia, the campus web portal
MyArcadia is a "portal" Web site, meaning it acts as a gateway to sources of information. MyArcadia gives students access to online course information, e-mail, library online resources and campus department Web sites. The site is also the main source for campus announcements and event listings, and provides a quick link to the student information which includes online registration, online access to grades and online payments. If you have difficulty connecting to MyArcadia, please contact the Helpdesk.
Where can I use my wireless laptop?
You can use your wireless laptop anywhere on campus as Arcadia's campus-wide wireless network provides full coverage in all academic buildings, residence halls and administrative areas. Students will still need to register their laptops as they would through the wired network.
Where are computer labs located on campus?
Computer labs are located in Boyer Hall, Brubaker Hall, and Landman Library. The following labs are open for student computing: Boyer Hall 8, 14, 19; Brubaker Hall 304, 305, 307; and the two labs on the lower level of the Landman Library. The labs in Landman Library are open 7 days a week, and the labs in Brubaker Hall and Boyer Hall are open Monday – Friday. Please check under the Technology tab of MyArcadia for computer lab hours. In addition to these open labs, there are several specialized labs available to students in certain disciplines. Students can also check out laptops for use in the library at the Circulation Desk.
What software is available in the labs?
The following programs are available on all lab computers: Microsoft Office (includes Access, Excel, FrontPage, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Word); Visual Studio, SPSS, SAS, Adobe Photoshop, Nvivo, Norton Antivirus; QuickTime; Internet Explorer; SAP Front-end; Shockwave Player; Flash Player; Real Player; Windows Media Player; WinZip; Acrobat Reader.
Software programs used for specific courses are available in certain labs. Available software is displayed on a poster in each of the campus computer labs.
What are online courses?
Arcadia University uses Blackboard as a web-based learning management system for students and faculty. This system provides supportive classroom materials (syllabi and class materials) and allows out-of-classroom communication between faculty and students.
Information Commons
The Information Commons—technology enhanced collaborative study and learning areas opened in fall 2005 in the Landman Library. Two rooms, one on the first floor and one on the second floor, are quiet and technologically equipped places for students who are working on collaborative projects. Each room contains a highend workstation, a 25” LCD panel, and a DVD/VCR player. A wide variety of software is available, including SPSS, Inspiration and Adobe PhotoShop. Students interested in taking advantage of this new work environment are welcome and encouraged to reserve a room for use.
Internet2
Arcadia University joined the Internet2 community in fall 2003. There are many exciting possibilities using the high speed Internet2 networks for faculty, such as to infuse internationalization in their courses, or form partnerships with other colleges and universities in the U.S.
Video Conferencing System
Two video conferencing systems are available to faculty, staff, and students on campus. These systems can be used in any classrooms in the Landman Library and Brubaker Hall. We can connect to anyone in the world using either an IP or ISDN connection.
Instructional Media Equipment
IT provides a wide variety of instructional aids as well as some equipment for recreational use. DVD/TV systems are dispersed around the campus; including in the residence halls. Video cameras are available for taping campus events. In addition, there are overhead projectors, slide projectors and data projectors for classroom and organization use. Several sound systems are also available for use for special campus events. Since there is a limited supply of equipment, it is advisable to request the equipment at least two week in advance. Please complete the online form on MyArcadia to request any instructional media equipment. The campus policy for requesting instructional media equipment is also available on MyArcadia.
Electronic Portfolios
An Electronic Portfolio allows you to collect digital projects to an online space for submission or display. As an Arcadia student you will automatically have access to this resource from MyArcadia. Your TaskStream account provides you with 100 MB of online storage which is accessible from anywhere. Even if you aren’t required use this technology for your program or a course, you may create a professional portfolio or archive selected work that you may share via a web browser.
