Room Assignment and Selection

In order to make room assignments, the staff takes into account information students have provided on the housing preference form. First-year students may be assigned to the following residence halls: Castle, Dilworth, Heinz, Kistler, or Thomas. Transfer students with prior residential experience may be assigned to the aforementioned halls, Knight Hall, or apartment-style housing. The traditional residence halls (Dilworth, Heinz, Kistler, and Thomas) are co-ed by either floor or wing. Traditional hall bathrooms are single gender and are determined by the floor’s residents. (e.g. the bathroom on a female wing or floor must be female only). The Castle, Knight, and apartments are coed by room, suite, or apartment respectively. Some Castle bathrooms are enclosed within a room, while others are shared. Shared bathrooms are single gender only. Knight suites and apartment-style housing all feature private bathrooms.

Room selection for upperclass students takes place late in the spring semester. Upperclass students who want to reside on campus for the following year must pay a deposit and are randomly assigned a lottery number based upon full-time semesters enrolled, semesters in residence and previous study abroad experience. This number determines the order in which students select their rooms. Singles are available to students with the lowest lottery numbers. Demand for rooms determines the number of rooms available to upperclass students. Based upon current demand, we have been able to accommodate all students requesting housing by the deadline.
