Sean Duffy: The Grove

Sean Duffy is recognized for paintings, sculpture, and installations that keenly and humorously explore popular culture. He has used the pixilated graphics of early video games to evoke geometric abstraction; combined ‘mod’ style with a modernist aesthetic in painting and design; explored concepts of appropriation and repetition in drawings of macramé and his multi tone-armed turntables; and used office furniture and the language of minimalism to explore concepts of work and leisure in American society.

Duffy was born in 1966, in San Diego, and currently lives and works in Valencia, California. He received his B.A. in Visual Arts and Political Science from the University of California at San Diego and his M.F.A. from the University of California at Irvine. The artist has recently presented solo exhibitions at the Susanne Vielmetter Berlin Projects, Berlin, Germany; California 101 Building, San Francisco; Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, Culver City, California; Howard House, Seattle; and the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara, California. His work has been included in the select group exhibitions: “Greetings from the American Dream”, Riverside Art Museum, Riverside, California; “Realm of the Senses”, James Cohan Gallery, New York; the California Biennial, Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, California; “Black Belt”, Studio Museum, Harlem; and “Remix/ Experimenter”, Museum of Modern Art, San Salvador.
