Campus NewsChristina Dixon ’10: Hits, Hip-Hop and Interning “My internship consists of three parts—I work in the promotions department, in-studio, and assist around the office. In the promotions department, I attend different events around the area. In-studio, I work with the disc jockeys, answer phones for song requests, and take down winner information and audio clips from celebrities. When I assist around the office, I basically do any tasks asked of me,” she says. If finding an internship seems intimidating, rest assured that the process isn’t grueling. Dixon acquired hers simply by going on the company’s Web site, sending her information to the internship coordinator and then waiting for a response. It was well worth the wait, as Dixon asserts, “An internship is very important because it allows students to really see what goes on in their field. You are able to network and possibly land a job there. It will also give you experience, and it looks good on your résumé. I enjoy interacting with the fans, working with top industry people, and I absolutely love the perks. Since I started, I’ve been given the opportunity to go to three concerts. It’s amazing!” When asked what she thought of long-term work in her field of interest, Dixon says, “Even though I’ve discovered that everything is not glitz and glamour in radio, I would seek employment within the field. You have to play hard, and it’s very competitive. Your job is not promised.” She also is very encouraging to future student interns. “Go for it! You have nothing to lose, only something to gain. It’s imperative that you find an internship,” she says. “It will clear up some things if you are unsure about the field and give you experience that no one can take away.”
