World Model United Nations 2008

The Arcadia delegation is given a country or countries to represent and then students pick a committee in which to participate. The committees are actual committees that actual country representatives are currently sitting in at the United Nations. Every committee has two topics to submit position papers on, and then at the conference the committee debates and hopefully passes a resolution on one of the given topics. You become an expert on the country you are representing. Knowledge of the countries’ past dealings with other countries, the United Nations, and the passing/ratification of international agreements are crucial to your country’s standings on certain issues. Some committees are very small, only having up to 20 representatives. Other committees are incredibly large have more than 200 representatives. Delegates go to their committees during the day, to a different social events at night, as well as on in-conference trips around the area.

This year, Arcadia will be representing Egypt and Venezuela in 12 committees. Seniors Brittany McCall and Colleen Gray are the Co-Head Delegates, having participated in the conferences in both China and Switzerland. It was an incredibly heated and competitive selection of the delegates for this year. Harvard has had to start putting a limit of delegates from each school because of the growing popularity of the conference. Students must meet a certain criteria to be admitted into the class.

World MUN is a culturally, eye-opening experience that enhances Arcadia’s international program. Not many other schools around our area participate in this conference. It is a unique program that gives students the opportunity not only to become submerged in the country’s culture and history they are representing, but also experiencing the host country’s culture and history while at the same time while creating friendships and contacts from all over the world.
