Campus NewsClinton Global Initiative Pabon took the initiative of applying for the CGIU workshop after seeing it advertised on MTV. “I was interested since the meetings scheduled had a lot to do with the classes I have taken at Arcadia as well as discussions we have had in the Student Activist Club,” says Pabon. I checked out the Web site and decided to apply.” For her application, Pabon wrote a series of essays on global problems, her commitment to action and ways to spread awareness on campus. Since most of the people who will be attending the conference were professors or graduate students, “I wasn’t sure if my application had merit,” she says. But Pabon felt that she had much to contribute because her parents are from a developing country. “I have experienced first-hand poverty issues and have seen Colombia’s problems concerning terrorism and ineffective government.” Her goal is to bring back information for the Student Activist club at Arcadia to use for it different activities. Pabon is currently working with the Arcadia Student Activist Club on Project: Africa a fund-raiser with the intent of raising awareness in the community about the needy in African nations. The eventwill be held on Saturday, April 5, in The Chat and will include a viewing of the documentary Invisible Children about the abandoned youth of Uganda followed by a presentation by Arcadia senior, Gabriel Akok Deng, who will talk about his personal history as a “Lost Boy of Sudan.” Sophomore, Daniel Dotse will talk about his annual book drive for libraries in his home country of Ghana along with a charity he is currently organizing for the continuing education of children in Ghana.
