‘Do You Know Where Your Computer Is?’
(Continued from Bulletin home page)
This week’s Computer Security Tip
Is your password secure?
An effective password is the one that is difficult to decode and can
be remembered.
Even the best network security cannot guarantee the protection of
your information if you use a weak password or if make your passwords
available to others.
There are two main issues with using passwords. First, you must
use strong passwords. Second, you must protect and manage them.
Creating a Stronger Password
- Make it moderately
long (between 8 to 12 characters)
- Use a seemingly
random combination of letters (both upper and lower case), numbers,
and symbols
- Don’t use
words find in the dictionary, familiar names, hobbies, pet names,
or any other that could be easily detected?
Managing and Protecting your Password
- Change each of
your password every 5 month
- Never write down
or electronically store your password; someone else might see it
- Make your password
easy to remember but hard for someone else to guess.
The following will show you how to create a password with these
characteristics and still remember it. Picking letters from phrase
that’s meaningful to you may be the source for a good password.
For example:
- “I usually go for lunch at 12:05!” could be Iug4l@12:05!
- “I feel great!” could
be If33lg8!
