Mathematics Education
NewsletterAs part
of the annual meeting of the International Commission for the Study and
Improvement of Mathematics Education, you can attend the Quality Class! This is an exchange program for mathematics
student-teachers. The students have to have at least some school practice
(teaching) in mathematics for students ages 12 – 18. Most participants are over
half way through their education for teaching. They should be able to
communicate in English, and of course for USA-students it is necessary that
they keep in mind that not every participant of the quality class has fluency
in this language.
The aim
of the quality class is to learn from different countries and cultures about
mathematics teaching and exchange each others’ concepts of learning of
mathematics. This means the students should be open-minded for quite different
views. You can imagine the
From Lambrecht Spijkerboer, this year’s coordinator: “The assignments for the
students are that they have to prepare a morning- or afternoon-session to
work with the group. This is called a workshop because we want to have active
participants with a discussion, exercise or presentation. The subject for the
workshop is free, but a part of this should contain the presentation of
the national school system. This is mostly a part of the workshop for about 30
minutes. We travel 5 July to SNRI and meet each other in the evening for diner.
6,7,8 July is the exchange program, 9 - 15 we attend the cieaem58-conference.
During conference there will be some meetings with the group for reflection and
sometimes special events for this group. The students should make a report
for evaluation. Some universities do use these reports for points, some
don't. In the afternoon of 15 July the quality class is finished.”
