CIEAEM Quality Class an Opportunity not to be Missed!

As part of the annual meeting of the International Commission for the Study and Improvement of Mathematics Education, you can attend the Quality Class! This is an exchange program for mathematics student-teachers. The students have to have at least some school practice (teaching) in mathematics for students ages 12 – 18. Most participants are over half way through their education for teaching. They should be able to communicate in English, and of course for USA-students it is necessary that they keep in mind that not every participant of the quality class has fluency in this language.

The aim of the quality class is to learn from different countries and cultures about mathematics teaching and exchange each others’ concepts of learning of mathematics. This means the students should be open-minded for quite different views. You can imagine the Poland and Czech way of thinking about education is different from Sweden, the Netherlands, and USA (which are more western oriented countries) and different from Portugal, Italy and other South European countries.

From Lambrecht Spijkerboer, this year’s coordinator: “The assignments for the students are that they have to prepare a morning- or afternoon-session to work with the group. This is called a workshop because we want to have active participants with a discussion, exercise or presentation. The subject for the workshop is free, but a part of this should contain the presentation of the national school system. This is mostly a part of the workshop for about 30 minutes. We travel 5 July to SNRI and meet each other in the evening for diner. 6,7,8 July is the exchange program, 9 - 15 we attend the cieaem58-conference. During conference there will be some meetings with the group for reflection and sometimes special events for this group. The students should make a report for evaluation. Some universities do use these reports for points, some don't. In the afternoon of 15 July the quality class is finished.”

Approximate costs no including air travel: $500.00. Contact Peter Appelbaum for more details

Conferences in the Czech Republic sprouting like wildfire!

Several mathematics education conferences are taking place in the Czech Republic this summer, and each is worth your time. In addition to the special “quality class” of CIEAEM (International Commission for the Study and Improvement of Mathematics Education) mentioned above, the conference itself is a fascinating international experience. Srni, Czech Republic, July 9-15, 2006. Check out the details at http://www.pef.zcu.cz/cieaem58/en/ . Also, the International Psychology of Mathematics Education conference (PME) is July 16-21 in Prague (http://pme30.cz/); and the International Conference on Creativity in Mathematics Education (ICCME) is July 5-8 in Ceske Budejovice (http://wwwmath1.uni-muenster.de/didaktik/u/meissne/WWW/creativity.htm).
