MATHEMATICS EDUCATION CONFERENCES NEXT FALL

If you missed the national conference in the Philadelphia convention center, you should be really disappointed … But you have a chance to redeem yourself! The Eastern Regional Conference is scheduled for Baltimore, Maryland, October 14-16, 2004, and you can start planning a way to get there NOW. It will be a slightly more intimate version of the same type of workshops and information sessions targeted toward every possible interest in mathematics teaching. Be there or be square! Register online by September 17th to get special savings! www.nctm.org/meetings/registration . Also, the PCTM confernece will be in Erie at the Avalon Hotel October 27-29; see http://www.pctm.org/  Another great opportunity!

Graph Theory and Combinatorics Scheduled for this Summer

Another opportunity to complete those interesting and attractive requirements for certification, this course is also be of interest to anyone teaching middle or high school mathematics, as it will help you understand more about the discrete mathematics you are expected to teach. 12:00 – 1:50 MTWR during the second summer session. The course is being offered as part of its regular cycle of alternating Fall and Spring every other year (this year summer, next year fall, etc.); if you need this course to meet requirements, now is a good time to take it – the next time it will be offered is Fall 2005.

Summer 2004 Professional Development Opportunities

NCTM workshops available include one on Assessment June 24-26 in Cleveland, and one on Data and Probability July 12 –14 in Boston. Go to http://www.nctm.org/academy/dates.htm for more info. The International Society for Mathematics, Art, and Architecture has a conference every summer, including this June. Go to http://www.isama.org/ for details.

New York Urban Teachers Opportunity

The New York City Department of Education is seeking excellent teachers with an interest in teaching a shortage subject such as mathematics, science, special education, bilingual education or Spanish. Even if you are not certified in one of these shortage subjects this fall, you may be eligible to add a second certification through their Subject Conversion program. In addition to adding a new certificate, incentives to become a NY Urban Teacher include:

The deadline for Subject Conversion candidates is quickly approaching on May 3, 2004. For more information, or to apply, head over to www.nyUrbanTeachers.org

What’s happening with you these days?

New Networking and News Section to be Started: Please send in news about your work in mathematics education so that we can include it in this newsletter. What have you been doing since we last heard from you? New job? Trying new kinds of lessons or technology? Looking for someone to co-plan some new assessment instruments, or to combine test prep with open-ended investigations? Write Peter at appelbaum@arcadia.edu and we’ll create a section of this newsletter for sharing news, reconnecting with old friends, networking and other collaborations.

Mathematical Moments

The American Mathematical Society offers lovely resources related to appreciating and understanding the roles that mathematics plays in science, nature, technology, and human culture. http://www.ams.org/ams/mathmoments.html. This and other websites are featured this semester on the matheducaiton webpage at http://gargoyle.arcadia.edu/appelbaum/mathweb.htm. (see invitation for ideas for this website below).

What websites are most useful to you in your work? New websites are needed for feature on the mathematics education website page at http://gargoyle.arcadia.edu/appelbaum/mathweb.htm. Check out the current list, and send new ideas to Peter at appelbaum@arcadia.edu.

Adjunct Instructors Sought

Instructors are needed with expertise in the following areas: Teaching Developmental Mathematics; Learning and Assessment in Elementary Mathematics; Teaching Geometry; Mathematics Content for the Middle School Math Praxis Test. Anybody interested should get in touch with Peter Appelbaum and submit a resume or c.v. (appelbaum@arcadia.edu; 215-572-4476). A minimum of a master’s degree and professional experience in a relevant area is required. It could be fun to teach a graduate course because you get to share ideas with people who can give you feedback and reactions based on their own professional contexts.
