ONE MORE MATH EDUCATION COLLOQUIUM THIS YEAR -- Math For Poets And Drummers: The Mathematics of Rhythm

Rachel Hall of St. Joseph’s University, February 15th, speaking on the mathematics of drumming. At the Castle, cookies and coffee at 7:00; the presentation is from 7:30-8:30, with questions and discussion to follow. Continuing education credits are available for this, so bring educator friends who need more hours!

 

Research for Better Schools 2005 Regional Conference is February 7 -9 at the Penn’s Landing Hyatt Regency in Philadelphia. The focus of this conference is the current state of student content knowledge and process skills in mathematics and science; exploring evidence-based materials and practices that will help students reach high standards; and building professional networks that increase leveraging of resources. Teams of two get a discount on the registration fee!

 

NCTM President Continuing to Host Chats

The next live webchat with Cathy Seely is Tuesday, January 18th.  January’s topic is “Being the best math teacher you can be in 2005.” What is the most valuable professional learning you have experienced? What do you wish you could learn more about? Have you been part of a learning community that worked together to become the best math teachers you could be? NCTM E-Workshops Happening All Around Us!

If you are already a member of NCTM (which you should be!) then you have already gotten announcements about these things. If not, go to the NCTM website (http://nctm.org) and join! Here’s a reminder about the on-line workshop in “Implementing the algebra standard,” January 19th (register by January 14th) , or February 16th (register by February 7th). Workshops are available targeted for every grade level PreK-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12.

 

CHANGES IN SOCIETY: A CHALLENGE FOR MATHEMATICS EDUCATION” is this year’s CIEAEM theme. The International Commission for the Study and Improvement of Mathematics Education (Commission Internationale pour l’Étude et L’Amélioration de l’Enseignement des Mathématiques) is holding its 57th conference meeting July 23-29 in Piazza Armerina, Sicily. PME-NA XXVII: The North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education will be meeting October 20 to 23, 2005, in Roanoke, Virginia. Proposals are due February 1, so hop over to that website now if you are interested! http://www.pmena.org/. Theme: Frameworks that support research and learning.

 

Mathematically Sane Group Alive and Kicking

Rumor has it a good price on T-Shirts was to be had at last year’s NCTM conference. The website makes no mention of clothing, but does have a great set of resources on mathematics education reform and associated issues. http://www.mathematicallysane.com/home.asp

Still room in some mathematics education courses! As you know, mathematics education courses at Arcadia rarely get such large registration that they end up closed. Some courses ended up being cancelled for lack of enrollment this semester, but others are still active. Share these opportunities with friends and colleagues:

Adjunct Instructors Sought

Instructors are needed with expertise in the following areas: Teaching Developmental Mathematics; Learning and Assessment in Elementary Mathematics; Teaching Geometry; Mathematics Content for the Middle School Math Praxis Test. Anybody interested should get in touch with Peter Appelbaum and submit a resume or c.v. (appelbaum@arcadia.edu; 215-572-4476). A minimum of a master’s degree and professional experience in a relevant area is required. It could be fun to teach a graduate course because you get to share ideas with people who can give you feedback and reactions based on their own professional contexts.
