New Application Deadline for University of Cape Town

Due to changes in the application process at the University of Cape Town, we will be pushing up our application deadline for the spring semester to October 1.  All other spring application deadlines for Arcadia programs in South Africa (i.e. University of the Western Cape and Stellenbosch University) will remain at October 15.  Please direct any questions or concerns to Traci Chupik, Senior Program Manager for South Africa.

British Member of Parliament, Barry Sheerman, Receives Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree

Dr. Nicolette DeVille Christensen, Vice President of Arcadia University and Executive Director of The College of Global Studies had the privilege of delivering the remarks as Arcadia University honored British Member of Parliament Barry Sheerman. Among his many and varied commitments, Sheerman has been instrumental in furthering Arcadia study abroad students' understanding of international politics and diplomacy, as they serve as British Parliamentary interns on the Arcadia London Internship program.

Study Tour to Greece For Advisors

We are pleased to announce that we will be running a study tour to the Arcadia Center for Hellenic, Balkan, and Mediterranean Studies in Athens, Greece from Sunday, November 15th through Wednesday, November 18th, following the CIEE conference in Istanbul, Turkey.  The tour is geared to study abroad advisors and faculty and will include a visit to the Arcadia Center in Athens, presentations by our Dean of Studies, and the faculty and staff in Athens as well as extensive information on our academic and co-curricular programming in Greece.  Please contact Lorna Stern, Director of Institutional Relations, for more details.



New Programs Manager for New Zealand and Tanzania

We were delighted to welcome Margaret Walter to the Arcadia team last month as program manager for New Zealand and Tanzania. Margaret is currently completing an MA in International Education through World Learning’s SIT Graduate Institute and worked in the study abroad office at Fordham University in New York prior to joining Arcadia. Margaret has extensive experience abroad, having studied for a summer at Cambridge University, spent her junior year in college abroad in Madrid, Spain, and participated in various short-term programs in Nicaragua and Panama. Please join us in welcoming Margaret Walter to the Arcadia team.

Arcadia Staff in the News!

Dr. Colin Ireland, Resident Director in Ireland recently presented a paper, titled “St. Patrick: Immigrant and Icon of National Unity” to the ACIS (American Conference for Irish Studies) held at NUI Galway last week. 

Arcadia at NAFSA 2009.  Arcadia staff from around the world presented at various workshops, roundtables, and training sessions at the NAFSA:  Association of International Educators conference in Los Angeles last month.  Learn more here.  In addition, NAFSA showcased the publication:  "Sexual Health Abroad: A Guide to Healthy Practices," authored by Arcadia Assistant Director for the Southeast Region, Melissa Chambers. The publication is now available for order on NAFSA’s website.

This month's background highlights Arcadia University in Glenside, PA. Grey Towers Castle was built in 1898 and is the centerpiece of the Arcadia campus.

Center For Education Abroad becomes The College of Global Studies

Arcadia University, founded in 1853, is pleased to announce that on May 29th, 2009, the Center for Education Abroad became The College of Global Studies, now one of three colleges of the University:  The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, The College of Business, Health and Sciences, and The College of Global Studies.

As Arcadia University expands its commitment to the full integration of global study within the life and academic mission of the University, The College of Global Studies will continue to uphold the University’s mission to prepare students for life and service in a global society.

With over 60 years of leadership and innovation in international education, The College of Global Studies offers over 100 semester, full year, and short-term study abroad programs for undergraduates (including first year students) and graduates in 14 countries.  Adding to this range of programming, the College will emphasize special focused study and research programs, graduate degree programs, certificate programs, extensive co-curricular programming, internships, faculty and student exchanges, and service learning projects.

The University has also established a center for research and assessment within The College.  The Research and Assessment Center will provide a place for Arcadia faculty and scholars from around the world, as well as those from other institutions, to collaborate on research initiatives.  The work of the Center will provide a research foundation and agenda for future program development and initiatives both for Arcadia University and the wider field of international education.

Changes to the Fall Schedule at Queen's University, Belfast and the University of Ulster

Beginning in Fall 2009, students attending Arcadia programs at the University of Ulster and Queen’s University, Belfast, in Northern Ireland during the fall semester will now be assessed before the winter holidays and will return home in late December, in contrast to the previous January exam period for fall semester students.  This new schedule is more accommodating to North American students and eliminates the need for a fall term option.  All students attending programs at QUB or the University of Ulster will receive 15 semester hours of credit.  Please check our website for program dates or contact Amanda Zimmerman, Program Manager for Ireland.

Indiana University Student Named Intern of the Year

Renita Bakshi, a rising senior marketing major at Indiana University, participated in The Arcadia London Internship Program in Spring 2009. Keeping in mind her passion for movies and the Bollywood film industry, the Arcadia team in London was able to secure a placement for Renita with the highly regarded UK Film Productions Ltd, a company that provides services and support to Bollywood films that are
shot in the UK.

At UK Film Productions Ltd, Renita had a once in a lifetime experience as she worked as the Assistant Production Coordinator for the major Bollywood film Veer under David Choudhry, the Line Producer and the owner of UK Film Productions Ltd. Her responsibilities included: finalizing and negotiating locations based on script requirements; coordinating for producer/director; communicating with appropriate authorities to acquire visas for foreign crew; and providing leadership to and managing the day-to-day activities of the production staff. Renita also had the chance to interact with very renowned glitterati like Producer Vijay Galani, director Anil Sharma, superstars Salman Khan, Jackie Shroff and Miss UK Universe, Lisa Lazarus. It does not end there: Renita had the opportunity to act in the film as well!
